Common bathroom layout mistakes (and how to avoid them)

A successful bathroom renovation needs careful planning, especially for the layout. Once construction starts, the floor plan is difficult and expensive to change. Here are the layout mistakes we see most often across our service area, and how we prevent them during the design consultation.

Layout decisions are one of the earliest and most consequential steps in any remodel — which is why we walk through them during the free design consultation before anything else is agreed.

Choosing fixtures that are too big

It’s easier than you’d think to overestimate the space in a bathroom. Picking fixtures larger than the room can hold hurts both aesthetics and functionality.

This problem shows up most often with tubs, but it also happens with vanities and showers. Oversized pieces eat floor space, restrict movement, and make the bathroom look busy.

How we prevent it: Our design consultants measure your bathroom precisely and present fixture options that fit the space, not the other way around.

Positioning the toilet poorly

This often happens in smaller bathrooms. The toilet should not be in the direct sightline of the door, and there needs to be adequate leg room around it.

How we prevent it: Toilet placement is part of every Full Bathroom design review. We’ll tell you if the existing position is wrong and what your options are.

Inadequate storage

Chasing a minimalist look, some homeowners cut storage too aggressively. The result is items scattered on the vanity and floor, exactly the cluttered look they were trying to avoid.

How we prevent it: When we install a vanity as part of a Full Bathroom, we size it for your actual storage needs. A recessed mirror cabinet or wall-mounted storage adds capacity without taking floor space.

Not separating the bathroom into zones

If you have a large bathroom, lining all the fixtures up against one wall creates dead space in the middle of the room.

How we prevent it: Our design consultants will show you a layout with proper zones for the bath, shower, vanity, and toilet, including partial walls where they make sense.

Not considering existing pipes and infrastructure

Unless you’re building from scratch, you’ll need to work with the existing plumbing. Moving plumbing is possible but expensive and labor-intensive.

How we prevent it: Baths R Us doesn’t take on major plumbing projects, so during your free consultation we’ll be upfront about what your existing layout supports and what would require a separate plumber. Most homeowners find the layout works once we redesign the wet area and vanity around the current plumbing.

Measuring incorrectly

Bad measurements cause cascading problems. One wrong measurement can knock the entire bathroom out of alignment.

How we prevent it: Every Baths R Us project includes professional measurement before manufacturing or installation begins. Our acrylic wall systems are custom-fit to your bathroom, so the measurement step is non-negotiable on every job.
