Best materials for bathroom walls, floors, and showers

Bathroom materials vary widely in quality, cost, and how well they hold up to daily use. The right material does more than look good. It determines how long your bathroom stays beautiful, how easy it is to keep clean, and how much maintenance it asks of you.

Why do bathroom materials matter?

Bathrooms are one of the toughest environments in your home: heat, humidity, soaps, and constant temperature swings. Cheap materials show their age fast.

Three properties matter most: moisture resistance, ease of cleaning, and how the material handles years of daily wear.

Acrylic panels: the modern shower standard

For shower walls and tub surrounds, custom-fit acrylic panels are hard to beat, and they’re the foundation of every Baths R Us renovation.

Acrylic earns that position on real performance:

  • Non-porous and 100% waterproof. Water can’t soak in, which means no warping, swelling, or hidden moisture damage behind the surface.
  • Mold and mildew resistant. No grout, no porous surface, nowhere for mold to grow.
  • Easier to clean than any tile. No grout lines means no grout scrubbing. A wipe-down keeps it looking new.
  • Warm to the touch. Tile and stone hold cold; acrylic doesn’t.
  • Highly impact-resistant. Modern reinforced acrylic handles daily use without chipping or cracking.
  • Customizable. Wide range of finishes, including stone-look and tile-look options that give you the high-end aesthetic without the maintenance burden.
  • Faster, cleaner installation. Acrylic goes in as panels rather than dozens of individual tiles. This is what makes a one-day wet area remodel possible, and it’s why a Baths R Us Full Bathroom takes 3 to 5 days instead of 3 to 6 weeks.

How Baths R Us installs acrylic differently

Most “one-day remodel” companies install acrylic as an overlay on top of your existing tub or wall. Baths R Us doesn’t. We demolish the wet area down to the studs, address any hidden water damage, and install a custom-fit US-made acrylic system as a complete waterproof unit. Our W2 install crews do the work; we don’t use 1099 subs. Lifetime product warranty, 3-year labor warranty.

Porcelain and ceramic tile

Tile remains popular for design flexibility. The trade-off is grout: porous, mold-attracting, and requiring regular cleaning and re-sealing to stay looking sharp.

Note: Baths R Us does not install tile, stone, or grout. If your design vision requires hand-laid tile, you’ll want a different remodeler.

Marble and natural stone

The most luxurious option, but it’s expensive up front, requires regular sealing, and stains more easily than people expect.

Glass tile

Unique and trendy, but complex to install, which makes it expensive and slow.

PVC wall panels

A budget-friendly waterproof option, but doesn’t have the durability or finish quality of acrylic. For a similar installation profile at a higher quality tier, acrylic is the better long-term investment.

Fiberglass panels

The budget end. Scratches, dulls, and yellows over time. Most homeowners replace it within 10 years.

Waterproof paint

Cheapest option. Only for areas outside the splash zone.
